This series consists of colour slides which were donated by Mr Harold Furber (1942-2021), a representative of the Stolen Generation, who was removed from his home in Central Australia, and sent to the Methodist Overseas Mission on Croker Island. These slides were photographed by Clarice Tucker and given to Mr Furber by one of the missionaries.
According to Mr Furber's biographical video, "Remembering Country" [2000 Australian Film Commission, Cinemedia, Charlotte Seymour and Harold Furber], many missionaries had cameras and took slides and photographs of the mission and the mission children. Friday nights were slide nights at Croker Island and the slides that were shown were often those of the Croker Island mission.
These slides cover the period from 1960-1964 and depict many aspects of mission life, including the sleeping quarters of the children (known as cottages), mustering cattle, beach activities, the mission shop and bank and transportation. Some slides depict the children that were removed from their families to grow up on the mission. Some of these children are identified by name.
Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This series contains references and photographs of Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available. Care and discretion should be used when viewing these records.
Recordkeeping System
A numbering system has been imposed as the original numbering system included duplicate, changed and missing numbers. The original numbers are written in pen on the slide mounts. The imposed number appears on the top right hand side, written in pencil. The original numbering system is shown in description 3.
